The Core Measure Series

Transforming the experience of care, one core measure at a time

With every encounter we touch lives and impact lifetimes.

Showing up to each encounter with intention; with a heightened awareness that in this singular moment you are able to create a healing connection that conveys kindness and compassion aligns with a trauma informed paradigm.

"Personal transformation can and does have global effects. As we go, so goes the world, for the world is us. The revolution that will save the world is ultimately a personal one". - Marianne Williamson

The operational strategy behind a trauma informed paradigm and providing trauma sensitive, developmentally supportive care begins with the Five Core Measures for Trauma Informed Care.

These five core measure sets, endorsed by the National Association of Neonatal Nurses and the Council of International Neonatal Nurses,  define evidence-based, trauma informed developmentally supportive care practices that meet the physiological, psychological, and socio-emotional needs of vulnerable individuals in crisis.

The importance of meeting these human needs is eloquently described by Don Berwick M.D., the former president of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement and a pediatrician, shared his personal fears of becoming a patient:

"What chills my bones is indignity...homogenized, anonymous, powerless...It scares me to be made helpless before my time, to be made ignorant when I want to know...or to be alone when I need to hold my wife's hand...You can call it patient-centeredness if you choose, but I suggest to you, this is the core, it is the property of care that welcomes me to assert my humanity and my individuality and my uniqueness. And, if we be healers, that is not a root to the point, it is the point" - Don Berwick M.D. (2009).

It is in meeting the unique human needs of the individuals we serve that we are invited to transform their experience.  Transforming routine activities into meaningful moments acknowledges our shared humanity and enables us to transcend the suffering of others while offering hope through loving presence.

Each core measure is differentiated into three subcategories or attributes which represent evidence-based best practices for trauma informed developmentally supportive care.
